The movie IF, directed by John Krasinski, is a heartwarming tale that explores themes of imagination and human connection. The story revolves around a young girl who discovers she can see everyone's imaginary friends—characters often forgotten as their creators grow up. These "IFs" guide individuals through challenging times, and the film follows a magical adventure to reunite these imaginary friends with their children. Framestore, a global leader in visual effects, played an instrumental role in bringing this imaginative vision to life.

The Scope of Framestore’s Contribution

Framestore’s work on IF involved a team of approximately 660 artists, engineers, and supervisors across their London, Montreal, and Mumbai studios. This ambitious project required over six months of pre-production work, including storyboarding, character design, and previsualization (previz), followed by several months of on-set supervision and a 14-month animation production phase. Framestore also handled post-visualization (postviz) and final shot delivery, ensuring a cohesive integration of the characters into live-action scenes.

Creating Over 40 Unique Imaginary Friends

The film demanded the creation of more than 40 distinct imaginary friends, each with its own personality, appearance, and emotional depth. Framestore’s Visual Development (VizDev) and Design teams worked closely with the filmmakers to craft characters that were fantastical yet emotionally relatable.

Collaboration was key to the process. Director John Krasinski’s input was integral in shaping the look and feel of the characters, ensuring they aligned with the film’s whimsical yet poignant tone. From initial sketches to detailed 3D models, every step reflected a balance of creativity and technical precision.

Seamless Integration with Live-Action

A significant challenge in IF was blending CGI characters with live-action footage. Framestore’s Pre-Production Services (FPS) and VFX teams used previsualization to plan how the characters would interact within the live-action environment. On-set supervision ensured that lighting, actor interactions, and camera movements were captured to facilitate smooth integration during post-production.

Framestore’s VFX Supervisor Chris Lawrence and Animation Supervisor Arslan Elver led these efforts, ensuring the characters interacted naturally with their environments and co-stars. Techniques like detailed motion tracking and advanced rendering tools were employed to achieve a seamless final product.

Challenges and Innovations

One of the most demanding aspects of the project was ensuring the emotional authenticity of the characters. Each "IF" needed to convey a range of emotions while maintaining its unique personality. Framestore’s animation team worked extensively on capturing subtle expressions and movements to make the characters feel alive.

Conclusion

Framestore’s work on IF shows how they combined creativity and technology to bring over 40 imaginary friends to life. These characters added heart and magic to the story. By working closely with John Krasinski and his team, Framestore turned these playful creations into realistic characters, making the world of IF feel truly alive and captivating for the audience.
