Shahzod Boyhonov, a game developer and 3D artist, used a custom Geometry nodes solver to construct this simple Particle Trails implementation. Trails are generated as a curve. All the simulation are in geometry nodes.
If you want to try it yourself the creator has provided the blend files.
However, it has some problems. You can't bake the simulation and it doesn't show up in the final render animation. it will only work with viewport render animation. But soon Cartesian Caramel (Bbbn19) posted a solution for the problem.
The creator will be sharing the final files once he has done cleaning up the nodes and making it a bit user friendly adding more control.
